La Boite theatre’s new production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream is equal parts weird, hilarious, and brilliant. Given a retro suburban Australian setting rather than Athens and its surrounding forests, this production has managed to stay true to all of the themes that have made this play a timeless classic, while at the same time injecting it with a healthy dose of dark humour and a pinch of all things peculiar.
While there has been no shortage of ‘Shakespeare with a modern twist’ gracing theatres around the country in recent years achieving varying degrees of success, Director Benjamin Schostakowski, has been able to successfully navigate that fine line between respecting the original text and bringing to life a genuinely unique and engaging creation which will delight audiences regardless of whether it is their first or fiftieth time experiencing this band of young lovers, budding thespians, and naughty fairies.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream is now playing at La Boite Theatre until 7 March. Tickets are available viawww.laboite.com.au or call 3007 8600.
