Gold Coast LGBT youth drop in centre opens
By Ged Farmer
Gay and lesbian youth on the Gold Coast now have a safe haven to turn to with the opening of Expanded Horizons, a GLBT youth drop in centre.
After much consultation with QAHC, Open Doors and other services on the Gold Coast, Expanded Horizons aims to provide safe space as well as an opportunity for young people to develop social networks and to trigger into relevant services that are overdue and much needed.
There will be some guest speakers at times as well as some workshops designed especially for same sex attracted youth such as relationships, coming out, sexual health and addressing issues around isolation which occurs for young LGBT people.
The Drop In will also welcome the friends of the young people attending the group adding even more support and opportunities for those who maybe questioning their own sexuality or who just want to support their friends.
Expanded Horizons has been looking at ways to support these needs for young people on the Gold Coast given that there seems to be nothing else along these lines.
The team is young and vibrant and has a goal of setting up a sustainable Drop In that will grow to become something that young people on the Gold Coast have been crying out for for a long time.
The Drop in will operate Every 2nd and 4th Thursday afternoon of the month from 4pm to 6pm. The March dates are the 12th and 26th of March.
