Girls at PianoJean Kitson plays Ruth. Ruth is the month of July. She’s a Calendar Girl.

Jean you will know from anything that is seriously witty, clever and bitingly funny, the antithesis of her character Ruth, who she describes as “careful, even-tempered, a pacifier.”

“It’s a beautiful script, and during rehearsals we have all at some time burst into tears, and then in the next breath, gales of laughter,” said Jean.

“It is pacey with not a word to many, out of place. It’s so rich and evocative and moves through the emotions so effortlessly. Tears, laughter, tragedy, it’s a delight to play, and all cracked along by our wonderful young English Director.”

If you missed the movie, Calendar Girls is the hear-warming play based on an uplifting and inspiring true story that is quirky, poignant and hilarious. A group of ordinary middle-aged women, members of a very ordinary Yorkshire Women’s Institute, do something quite extraordinary. They spark a global phenomenon by persuading one another to pose for a charity calendar with a difference! As interest snowballs, the Calendar Girls find themselves revealing more than they'd ever planned.

“The moment of the big reveal came early in the process. We’d hardly all met when it was time for the photo shoot. Time to nude up,” said Jean.

“Oh it’s so easy to say, no time for modesty dear we’re in the theatre! However, as my character Ruth says, “ok so long as you don’t see any front bums”, and you don’t.

“It’s lovely to see a celebration of women at this age in all our various shapes and sizes. But it’s the emotional “nudity” revealed in the play that will stay with you long after our clothes are back on.”

As the lyrics of the song says “I love, I love, I love my Calendar Girl”. You’re sure to fall in love with your own special month of the year. Like the month of July for instance.
