Anti-HomophopiaAuthor and anti-homophobia advocate Daniel Wittaus has set out on a 38-week campaign to tackle the issue in regional Australia.
In his travels Wittaus will visit regional towns including; Port Lincoln, Esperance, Alice Springs, Mount Isa, Newcastle, Swan Hill, Ballarat and Launceston.
During his visits Wittaus will run community consultation and education sessions in order to promote better understanding of gay and lesbian people to those who may not have access to these resources.
Wittaus was expected to begin his campaign in Sydney or Melbourne but insisted that he start with his hometown of Geelong.
“I was quite adamant it had to be Geelong where my work started and where I'm from, that's what it's all about," Mr. Wittaus said.
"This is a world first, there's never been a national challenging homophobia tour in the world.”
Mr. Wittaus is 33 and launched a book “Beyond ‘That’s so Gay’: Challenging Homophobia In Australian Schools,” in Melbourne recently.
He will spend a week in each of the cities consulting with communities in an effort to tackle the problem on a national and international scale.
During his tour Wittaus also hope to delve into the challenges that face gays and lesbian across regional Australia.
"Some great things have been done to support gay and lesbian people but there are also people calling for more strategies and resources and we're looking to provide those," he said.
