Although she again failed to reach the top five of the Miss Universe Canada competition, transgender Jenna Talackova has been labelled a “winner”.

Amid saturation media coverage, Jenna, now 25, also made the top 12 last year after she was originally disqualified because she had undergone gender reassignment five years before and was deemed by event organisers not to be a “naturally born female”.

However, with the help of famous Hollywood lawyer Gloria Allred, she managed to get that decision overturned.

Allred told Pink News at the weekend that as far as she was concerned, Jenna, a model and television personality, was still a winner.

“She won an 'herstoric' civil rights victory (last year) and that I think is frankly more important than anything, any victory she would win, even representing Miss Canada,” Allred said.

Meanwhile, last year's Miss England finalist, transgender teenager Jackie Green, 19, has been named at No. 8 on the 14th annual Pink List of the 101 most influential LBGT figures in the UK.

At 16, Jackie became the youngest in the world to undergo transgender reassignment.

The Pink List, published by the Independent on Sunday, was topped by Meta magazine editor Paris Lees, ahead of TV presenter Clare Balding and human rights activist Peter Tatchell.

Independent on Sunday editor Lisa Markwell said the Pink List had evolved to become and authoratative celebration of influential LGBT people throughout the country.

“Every year it generates a huge amount of positive feedback and powerful stories of courage and bravery,” she said
