It was out with the old and in with the new. Queensland overwhelmingly wanted change and demanded it in record numbers, giving the LNP not only an unprecedented majority but also an undeniable mandate for reform and change. But what does this new era of leadership mean for the LGBTI community?

With the LNP keeping mum on what will happen with civil unions and a number of other important issues, it has left many in the community unsure of where to go from here.

The ‘Queer Coalition’ has called to arms the LGBTI community to discuss strategies for working with the new Government in Queensland at an upcoming forum on April 11th.

LGBTI rights crusader Rob Goodbun explained to QNews that the meeting is an opportunity for those involved to plan advocacy and pull together the resources needed to be effective.

“It would be great to try and establish some consensus, or at the every least to understand and respect the various approaches that individuals or groups may want to take,” Goodbun said.

While defending law reforms is an important topic, Goodbun also pointed out that it should be remembered that the LNP through Campbell Newman committed to consider removal from the criminal code the homosexual advance defence for murder.

“The Queer Coalition will be looking for positive solutions and approaches to handle working with a new government. We should expect to find allies in the new government and be prepared to help them take our issues forward."
