By Natalie Brown Former Seinfeld actor, Jason Alexander’s attempt at humour on the Late Late Show have hit a sticky wicket with audiences when he joked about how cricket was a 'gay game'. His comments were actually a rehash of some old material that he had used a few years earlier while in Australia, and audiences at the time received it in the jest that it was intended. However Alexander’s remarks during Craig Ferguson's show that cricket is a ‘gay game’ compared to other sports, proved to be an ‘in swinger’ with his Twitter followers who wasted no time in letting him know of his faux pas. Ironically, during one episode in the hit comedy series, Alexanders character George Kastanza had an encounter with a male masseuse where he questioned his own sexuality because his penis had ‘moved’ during the massage. Putting all other apologies to shame, Alexander penned a lengthy well-thought apology as an attempt to ‘make amends’, and acknowledged how his joking remarks may have played into ‘hurtful assumptions and diminishments about people. An ironic twist in the innings is that Alexander would have to be one of the least homophobic people on the planet. Having starred in Broadway musicals, worked alongside a host of gay actors, including in gay themed movie, and as someone with many gay friends, one might have to ask, are people taking it too far with political correctness?
I think we are are all a bit too sensitive! There are far more important things to be concerned about than a 1990's comedian (and I use the term loosely) making a joke about Cricket being 'gay'. Does it really matter?
